The first thing to know, when you purchase a Mexico auto insurance policy stateside, you are likely buying a tourist insurance policy. This type of policy is only valid for short-term, tourist visitors driving in Mexico. It’s not intended to be a permanent Mexican insurance policy.
This coverage for bodily injury and property damage to parties other than the insured and occupants of the insured vehicle, resulting from the use of the insured vehicle. Since your U.S./Canadian insurance is not valid in Mexico, this fulfills your “proof of financial responsibility” as required under Mexico law. Insurance coverage is available up to $300,000 U.S. Combined Single Limit for damages incurred to others.
This coverage protects your vehicle for the lesser of its ACV or amount stated on your policy for total theft, collision, over turn, fire, lightning, explosion, and certain natural phenomenon. Partial theft and acts of vandalism are excluded. Towing expenses are covered in order to move the vehicle to a place designated by the company for repairs, including to the U.S. if agreed by the company.
In case of total loss, the company will adjust on the basis of the Actual Cash Value (ACV) of the vehicle at the time of the accident. It is imperative that a realistic ACV of your vehicle be determined upon purchase of your insurance policy. Under-insuring your vehicle(s) may result in financial penalties in the event of a loss.
This coverage pays medical expenses for the driver and occupants of the vehicle for injuries sustained in the event of a covered loss. Insurance coverage is available up to $20,000 for each injured occupant but not more than $100,000 for all occupants combined.
What you can expect from this coverage is legal services and payment of bail bonds required in the event of a covered loss. These services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Also provided are travel assistance, including an automobile/travel hotline.
Motorcycles are eligible for Physical damage, Total Theft, and Liability insurance coverage while traveling in the Republic of Mexico. Medical Payments and Roadside Assistance are not available for motorcycles.
If your vehicle is “street legal”, then it is eligible for Physical Damage, Total Theft and Liability coverage while driven on standard roads and on golf courses in Mexico. No coverage is provided for “off-roading” or on unconventional roads. Medical Payments and Roadside Assistance are not available for ATVs and golf carts.
