Ways to save on boat insurance

It’s all about the discounts

Multi-policy

Is your home, car, motorcycle, or RV insured with us? You could save even more on boat insurance if you have another other insurance policy with the same carrier.

Multi-boat

You’ll earn a discount from some carriers for having more than one watercraft on your policy.

Original owner

One of the easiest ways to save! If you are the original owner of your watercraft, we’ll give you a discount. Ask which carriers offer this discount.

Safety course

Anyone can earn this discount. Just complete any state-approved safety course to save even more on your boat insurance policy.

Boat insurance that covers the rough waters

A boat insurance policy will automatically include liability – to pay for damages and injuries you may cause if you hit another boat, person, dock, buoy, or something else. Your policy will also offer comprehensive and collision coverage to pay for damage to your boat. But we may be able to get your coverage coverages and benefits that you may not get with every insurer.

24/7 Boat Towing Service

If you run out of gas or your boat breaks down on the water, you can get coverage for on-water towing, fuel delivery, soft ungrounding, and jump starts.

Example: You run out of gas in the middle of the river. If you have towing coverage, just call the towing service (number typical on your policy or card) or contact your carrier. This service can deliver fuel or tow you and your boat to the nearest shore.

Full replacement cost

When your watercraft needs to be repaired, some insurance companies will bring your boat back to its previous condition or better, and never depreciate the value of any of your parts.

Example: Seats are damaged on your 5-year-old boat. They’re older and only worth $50 each, so some insurers may only give you $200 ($50 per seat). But, you need new ones that cost $250 each. Replacement cost will pay the full $1,000 for all new seats. That’s an $800 difference!

Wreckage removal & fuel spill

When you buy a boat insurance policy, wreckage removal and fuel spill coverages may be automatically included. If your boat sinks or you’re responsible for a fuel spill, your insurance carrier can cover the bills all the way up to your policy’s limits of liability.

Example: Your older boat sinks while docked in your slip. You may be required to remove the wreckage and address any fuel spills. Just contact the insurance carrier to file the claim.

Roadside assistance

This coverage comes standard with some insurance companies when you have trailer coverage on your policy—this allows the insurance company to tow your disabled vehicle to the nearest repair shop.

Example: You’re hauling your boat to the lake and your vehicle breaks down or runs out of gas. The insurance company will pay to tow your vehicle and/or watercraft to the nearest repair shop.

Water sports coverage

Water sports coverage provides protection for injuries or damages you may cause while tubing, kneeboarding, wakeboarding, wake surfing, or other similar activities. Parasailing, kiteboarding, or other activities in which someone is pulled through the air won’t be covered.

Example: Your friend is injured while tubing on your boat. Water sports coverage can help to pay for their medical bills up to your policy’s limits.

FAQs about boat insurance

How does boat insurance work?

Whether you buy watercraft insurance on your directly through the insurance company or from an insurance agent, you’ll be asked some basic questions about you, your boat, and the coverages you’re looking for. All these factors will affect your price for insurance. Then, if you damage your boat or hit someone/something else, you’ll file a “claim” with your insurance company. If it’s covered, the insurance company will pay for the losses or injuries up to your coverage limits.

How much is boat insurance priced?

Insurance companies will look over a variety of “risk” factors, to ultimately determine the premium. It really comes down to risk: How likely are you to have a boat accident and what will that accident cost? Here are a few of the essentials that will determine your price:

Claims history: If you don’t have a record of auto or boat insurance claims, your insurance company will likely consider you less likely to have an on-water accident.

Type of boat: Just like with cars and motorcycles, your boat’s year, make, and model will affect your price. Newer boats generally cost more to replace, and boats designed for speed often cost more to insure than lower-performance boats. Whether you have an inboard or outboard motor will also influence your rate.

Boating experience: The longer you’ve spent on the water, the better. So, more experienced boaters are also less likely to have an accident. Completing a watercraft safety course may also help bring down the cost of boat insurance.

What is comprehensive insurance?

Comprehensive coverage is generally for damages to your boat from events beyond your control

The types of things comprehensive coverage is good for are:

  • Theft and vandalism
  • Explosions and fire
  • Hurricanes, lightning, and other weather-related damage
  • Falling trees or other objects
