Quoting & Buying Auto Insurance
You have two ways to get a quote with IronPoint Insurance Services: call us at (877) 334-7646, or start your quote online. When you quote online, your request goes straight into our system, and an agent calls you back as soon as possible.
For most carriers we work with, you’ll want to have:
- Your vehicle’s make, model, year, and VIN (if available)
- The names, birthdates, and driver’s license numbers of all drivers in your household
- Your current insurance policy details (if applicable)
- Your driving history, including accidents and violations
Some carriers ask for more. Mercury Insurance, for example, needs your work address. Others factor in your occupation, or offer discounts tied to a group or membership affiliation. That’s where working with an agent pays off — we help you sort through the details and land the most competitive quote.
Not long. The online form takes about 3–5 minutes to complete. Once you submit it, a personal insurance specialist follows up with your quote or to gather any additional details. The idea is that IronPoint does the heavy lifting, so the only real work left to you is deciding which option fits you or your family best.
Yes, though your options may be limited. Some insurers require a valid driver’s license before they’ll issue a policy. Others will write coverage for a permitted driver, or for a vehicle that isn’t actively being driven. If that’s your situation, our agents can point you to the carriers that are the right fit.
Not online — at least not yet. IronPoint Insurance Services doesn’t currently sell auto insurance directly online, though you can start your quote online to get things moving.
Here’s why: we’re an insurance agency, not the carrier. Our job is to pull as many quotes as you need, walk you through a free consultation, and help you buy the right policy. We can make that process fast, digital, and painless — we just can’t complete the sale online.
Your coverage begins as soon as you choose an effective date and complete your purchase. If you’re switching from another policy, make sure there’s no lapse in coverage between the two.
Want your policy effective the same day you buy it? That’s usually possible. Just know that some carriers will list the next day as the effective date while issuing a binder that confirms you’re covered from the exact time and date of purchase. If your policy works this way, ask your agent to show you where to find that binder.
Yes. Most states require liability insurance at a minimum, even when you own your vehicle outright.
Coverage that repairs or replaces your own car is optional — this is the part people loosely call full coverage. It isn’t mandatory once your car is paid off, but comprehensive and collision coverage still protect what is, for most people, a significant asset.
Yes — you’re free to switch insurers whenever you like. Two things to check first: whether your current provider charges a cancellation fee, and that your new coverage is active before you cancel the old policy, so you never have a gap. Our agents can time the switch so the two policies line up cleanly.
Absolutely. What you drive has a real effect on your rate. Cars with expensive repairs, powerful engines, or a higher theft risk tend to carry higher premiums. Convertibles are a classic example — their body structure, performance, and appeal to thieves and vandals all push the cost of coverage up.
Servicing & Changing Your Policy
You have a few ways to request changes to your auto coverage. Visit our support page and complete the appropriate form, click the chat icon for live help between 9 AM and 5 PM PT, or call us at (877) 334-7646.
One important note: submitting an online request doesn’t mean a change is bound. If you need coverage bound right away, it’s always best to call and speak with a customer service representative directly.
Through our online support page, you can request changes such as:
- Adding or removing a vehicle
- Adding or removing a driver
- Updating your address
- Adjusting coverage limits
- Requesting an ID card or policy documents
- Requesting evidence of insurance
Visit our support page and submit a request. We’ll review it and confirm any change in premium with you before updating your policy. You can also reach us through the live chat in the bottom-right corner of this page between 9 AM and 5 PM PT, or call us at (877) 334-7646.
Yes, though some insurers first require proof that the driver is insured elsewhere or no longer lives in your household. Submit your request on our support page, or use the live chat in the bottom-right corner of this page between 9 AM and 5 PM PT. If you’d rather talk the change through, call us at (877) 334-7646.
The quickest option is to download your insurance carrier’s mobile app. Most carrier apps let you request a new ID card or pull up a digital one on the spot.
If you’d like our help instead, visit our support page, call our team at (877) 334-7646, or use the live chat in the bottom-right corner of this page between 9 AM and 5 PM PT.
You can request a cancellation by submitting the form on our support page. Keep in mind that canceling before you have a new policy in place can leave you with a lapse in coverage, which may lead to penalties or higher rates down the road.
Some carriers also require a signed notice of cancellation. When that’s the case, we’ll send you an e-signature form to complete it.
To file a claim, contact your insurance carrier directly. You’ll find everything you need to reach your carrier’s claims department on our claims resource page. Their claims team can walk you through the next steps, including repair options and rental car availability.
Coverage & Discounts
At IronPoint Insurance Services, we can cover a wide range of vehicles — cars, SUVs, and trucks, plus vintage and classic cars. And if you’re planning to drive south of the border, you can even purchase a Mexico tourist auto insurance policy.
Most policies are built around a handful of core coverages:
- Liability coverage (required in most states)
- Collision coverage (for damage to your vehicle from an accident)
- Comprehensive coverage (for theft, vandalism, or other non-collision damage)
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (protects you when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance)
- Medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP) (covers medical expenses)
Beyond these, most policies offer several optional coverages worth reviewing with your agent. You’ll find a full breakdown on our auto insurance coverage page.
It comes down to a few factors.
If you have a loan or lease, your lender will likely require full coverage — comprehensive plus collision. If you own your car outright, liability is the only coverage you’re required to carry. Even then, comprehensive and collision are worth considering if repairing or replacing your vehicle out of pocket would be a real financial strain.
The last piece of the full-coverage equation is uninsured motorist, medical payments, and PIP coverage. These are always worth talking through with your agent before you finalize your selections.
Both provide first-party protection for your insured vehicle, but they cover very different things:
- Collision pays for damage to your car from an accident, regardless of fault.
- Comprehensive covers non-collision damage — theft, fire, vandalism, or weather.
Nearly all private passenger auto policies extend your liability coverage to a temporary replacement vehicle. It’s common, but not unconditional — check your policy or ask your agent about drop-down limits or other restrictions. Coverage may also apply only to you and others who qualify as an “insured driver,” so be careful about who you let behind the wheel of a rental.
First-party coverages like collision and comprehensive only carry over to a rental on some standard or preferred policies. Even so, we generally recommend buying these through the rental company directly, since your own policy may not cover diminished value or lost rental income if the rental company comes after you for those costs.

Yes, though most insurers require you to have an insurable interest in the vehicle — meaning you own or lease it. Insuring a car that isn’t registered to you may take a few extra steps, such as:
- Adding the registered owner to your policy alongside you
- Adding the registered owner to the policy as an excluded driver
Always check with your agent first. Many carriers run third-party reports and will often surface the registered owner, which can create headaches after purchase — or even lead to a cancellation.
Car insurance discounts are one of the easiest ways to bring your premium down. Carriers offer them to drivers and vehicles that show traits linked to fewer claims — and most discounts have to be validated to apply.
Some validate automatically through the carrier’s rating system. Others are confirmed through third-party data with no effort on your part. And a few can only be verified by you — for those, your agent may ask for documents to submit with your application. There’s a wide variety of discounts available, and we break them all down on our auto insurance discounts page.
Accident forgiveness keeps your premium from rising after your first at-fault accident. Not every insurer offers it, and eligibility depends on your driving record — your agent can tell you whether it’s available on your policy.
In many states, insurers factor a credit-based insurance score into pricing. Some states restrict or prohibit the practice, though — if you live in California, credit can’t be used for California auto insurance at all.
A lapse in auto insurance coverage can lead to higher premiums, fines, and even a license suspension in some states. If your policy is about to lapse, contact us right away, and we’ll help you explore your options.
