The Ten Myths about Insurance People Believe

Driver Distraction

We all know that cellphones are a major source of driver distraction, and they’re a rising cause of accidents nationally and rising auto insurance costs.

But did you know that the second leading cause of driver distraction are the other passengers in your vehicle?

That’s right.

I’ve witnessed this with my own personal experience, my daughter has had two fender-benders, and both involved her having too many passengers in her car. She’s actually pretty good about keeping the cellphone out-of-sight when driving … but the friends are a different story.

This is an important lessen to teach our teenage drivers, however, this isn’t just about inexperienced drivers. It effects all of us.

There are a myriad of things that can cause driver distraction when riding with passengers in the your car:

  • For mothers, there is the frequent reaching toward the back seat to help young children.
  • Checking on kids, pets or packed items in your review mirror
  • Having a conversation with friends while driving

Basically, anything that takes your focus and attention off of the road is an extremely dangerous distraction.

Think about it, if you are travelling at 50-mph, and you divert your attention for 5-seconds, you will have traveled 225 feet. Wow! To put it in perspective, a football field is 300 feet. So, you’re travelling a long way without the benefit of knowing what’s happening around you.

Establishing rules and “zones” can help keep everyone safe and happy on your road trip. Learn this simple vehicle and driving safety method from Travelers Insurance specialist Renee Lawson:
