Texas Car Insurance Minimum Coverage Requirements
Texas law requires liability coverage. Here are the current minimums for Texas car insurance:
Coverage Type | What’s Covered | Minimum Limit |
---|---|---|
Bodily Injury Liability | Injuries you cause to others | $30,000 per person / $60,000 per accident |
Property Damage Liability | Damage you cause to other people’s property | $25,000 per accident |
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) | Medical bills & certain lost income/household services for you/your passengers, regardless of fault | Offered by default (commonly $2,500 per person) unless you reject in writing |
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) | Helps when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance | Offered by default (at least up to state minimum limits) unless you reject in writing |
These are legal minimums. Many Texans choose higher limits—and add comprehensive and collision—to better protect savings and vehicles.
Texas Car Insurance Laws You Should Know
- At-fault state: The driver who causes the crash pays for injuries and damage. Minimum liability is 30/60/25.
- PIP & UM/UIM are offered by default: Both coverages are included unless you reject them in writing; PIP commonly starts at $2,500 per person.
- Proof of insurance: Digital ID cards are accepted, and the state checks coverage electronically—keep your policy active to avoid tickets or registration holds.
What TxDMV & DPS Want You to Know
- You must show proof of insurance at traffic stops and after a crash. Texas also verifies coverage through its TexasSure program.
- New to the state? Get Texas-compliant car insurance before you register your vehicle.
- Coastal homes: windstorm coverage may be written through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) if it isn’t available in the standard market.
SR-22 in Texas
Certain violations (like driving without insurance or DUI) can trigger an SR-22 filing requirement. Most drivers must keep continuous SR-22 coverage for two years. We can file and help you stay compliant.
