Acoustic Crazy by CeeLo Green & Daryl Hall

As much fun as it is to write about Real Estate Agent E&O Insurance or California home insurance, we normally take a break from normal insurance-related topics each month to share an acoustic or particularly good live performance by a pop, R&B, or rock artist.

I’m not getting any objection from the staff or our readers, so we’ll continue the tradition this month with the pop hit “Crazy” by CeeLo Green and Gnarls Barkley.

This is a particularly interesting version of the song as it’s not performed by Gnarls Barkley, rather it was performed on the hit internet show Live from Daryl’s House, so it’s a live performance of Crazy by CeeLo Green and Daryl Hall.

I think you’re going to love it.

A little bit about the song

“Crazy” is actually the debut single from the collaboration of Danger Mouse and CeeLo Green, better known as Gnarls Barkley. The song is from the 2006 album St. Elsewhere.

As I understand it, this song derives its inspiration from some of the scores from the 1960s “Spaghetti” westerns, with specific reference to the song “Last Man Standing”  by Gian Piero Reverberi and Gianfranco Reverberi from the 1968 spaghetti Western Viva! Django. In fact, Gnarls Barkley gives credit to Gian and Gianfranco in the song credits.

In an interview with Danger Mouse, it was shared that the song’s lyrics were developed around the concept that many artists, in order to be taken seriously, need to be a bit crazy. CeeLo Green took this concept and the song was written and then recorded in just a day.

Critical reception for the song and awards

“Crazy was actually released in March 2006, and upon its release, the song received immediate and widespread acclaim from critics. In 2009, Rolling Stone put it on their list of the 100 Best Songs of the Decade, as well as making it their 100th greatest song of all time. That’s a success.

In October 2011, NME placed it at number 32 on its list of “150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years“. In 2007, “Crazy” was named the best single of 2006 by The Village Voice‍ ’s annual year-end critics’ poll.

With all the critical acclaim, it makes sense that “Crazy” won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007. It was also nominated in 2007 for Record of the Year in the UK, where it lost to “Patience” by Take That.

Conclusion

In a few of the selections for our Acoustic Clip of the Month, I’m noticing that I’m not actually a “fan” of the artist. It’s not that I don’t appreciate them, just that they aren’t on my list of favorites. That’s the case with this particular selection.

Like many of you, I really know CeeLo from being a judge on The Voice. But after seeing a few of his performances during his time on The Voice, and watching some live performances on YouTube, I’m convinced CeeLo is a tremendous talent, and you’ll see this when you watch this clip.

I’m a lifelong fan of Daryl Hall and Hall & Oats, so I’ve watched Live from Daryl’s House for a few years now, and I’m sure those of you who really like music will want to bookmark his page and enjoy these sessions. Take care, and until next time, keep rockin’!
