Acoustic Nothing Compares 2 U by Chris Cornell

It’s been nearly 6 months since we posted the last Acoustic Clip of the Month, an awesome performance by CeeLo Green and Daryl Hall I just had to post even though it wasn’t acoustic. I’m at a loss to understand what interrupted the fun.

It couldn’t be our new business insurance projects, could it?

There is some sense of irony here, after the last post I recall saying I was going to convert the project to a weekly post. Ha!, so much for best-laid plans.

Well, I’m back at it, and I thought it appropriate to circle back to the beginning to find the perfect clip to restart the project.

Our first clip ever posted was Black Hole Sun by Chris Cornell, and this month our clip is once again from Chris Cornell. Only this time he’s singing Nothing Compares 2 U, written by Prince, and originally made famous by Sinead O’Connor.

A little bit about the song

Nothing Compares 2 U was originally composed by Prince for, The Family. The Family, the funk band released the song on their self-titled debut album in 1985, but Nothing Compares 2 U was not released as a single, and it received little recognition at the time.

In 1990 Sinead O’Connor released her version of the song, a rendition that reflected deeply on her mother’s death in 1985, and it became an international hit.

Later Prince did perform the song as a duet with Rosie Gaines and released it on his 1993 compilation album, but the song will eternally belong to Sinead O’Connor.

Those of us familiar with Sinead O’Connor’s rendition may not expect the song to fit into the soulful tones you expect from Chris Cornell, but it does, and he breathes some new life into the song with his smooth blues tones and acoustic arrangement.

Conclusion

Enjoy this month’s acoustic clip, and we’ll keep it up on a more regular basis … really!

We’ve created this fun diversion from our typical California auto insurance-related topics as a fun way to share something that we all truly enjoy. Music!

As a guitar player and hopelessly bad singer, I love to watch the best perform acoustically or live, it truly brings out the original spirit of the song.
