Acoustic The Scientist by Coldplay

The acoustic clips are a fun distraction from our normal business of home or auto insurance content. I truly look forward to researching the next clip, including the song facts. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I’ve enjoyed putting them together.

This month’s clip is an acoustic The Scientist by Coldplay from the British alternative rock band Coldplay. It’s off their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002). The song is written as a collaboration of all band members who participated in the album.

The original studio version of this song is a piano ballad, but the version in our clip is an acoustic guitar version.

That’s why we shared it. 🙂

The song was initially released in the UK where it reach number 10 on the UK Charts, however, as the third single released off of the album in the US it only reached number 18 on Billboard and Modern Rock Tracks.

Critics have been mostly positive toward the song, lending it praise for the piano ballad and the use of falsetto. Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone, in his review of the album, wrote: “The fantastic piano ballad ‘The Scientist’ … [has] a cataclysmic falsetto finale that could raise every hair on the back of your neck. Nick Southall of Stylus magazine wrote: “The piano that chimes through ‘The Scientist’ is captured perfectly, the warm depression of each individual key caught rather than a shrill ringing as is so often the case.”

While the song wasn’t a number-one single either in Europe or the United States, it is a fan favorite and is a permanent fixture in the band’s live sets since its release in 2002.

The lyrics to the song seem to tell a story of a man in love and having to apologize. When ask about the song, Chris Martin said it’s “… just about girls. It’s weird that whatever else is on your mind, whether it’s the downfall of global economics or terrible environmental troubles, the thing that always gets you most is when you fancy someone.”

About the Clip

The original clip was provided via Youtube and user Steve0724, but that clip was removed for copyright issues. I think the clip actually belonged to a UK-based radio station. Nonetheless, we have an updated version provided by DailyColdPlay, and it is equally cool. If you want to get to the song, you can skip forward to 2:46 where Chris starts playing. I stumbled upon this version and it has quickly become a favorite of mine and a song I frequently play acoustically for my own personal entertainment.
