Wear the proper gear

Wearing the proper protective and reflective gear is essential. Leather is always a good selection when you are looking for clothing that is durable. Good leather boots with straps, gloves, and a jacket with good ventilation and reflective stripes are ideal.

Make sure you're seen

Wear clothing that is reflective so that it is easier for drivers to see you on the road. You are simply more difficult to see on your motorcycle, so do your part to help other see you. Make sure you signal your intentions clearly to the other drivers on the road. Keep your headlights on at all times. The more visible you are the more safe you are.

Practice defensive driving

Adjust your riding to anticipate that other may not see you. Despite your best efforts to be visible, there still are those on the road who are not paying attention and will miss you on the road. Be read for this and plan ahead. If you assume others can see you, you'll be wrong.

Be familiar with your bike

The more comfortable you are on your bike the better prepared you will be to respond to difficult conditions. Before you take the road make sure you are completely comfortable with your bike and how it handles. If you are not ready, practice and move up to low traffic conditions before you attempt more complex rides. You have to be prepared to react to all types of strenuous conditions and under all types of circumstances and weather conditions.
